Niraj Shukla
BSc (Hons)
Teacher of Economics and the Year Head for GCE
Niraj is a young and dynamic teacher who has been teaching for six years. He has a degree in Economics and Philosophy from the University of Nottingham and at secondary level he attended Merchant Taylors’ School which means that he has an intimate understanding of the mechanics, style and approach of a top independent school. Niraj is an extremely passionate teacher and this stems from his passion for learning: he is currently studying part time (in his free time) for a degree in Mathematics and Physics and he is also a performing amateur pianist. At HIC, he runs the Debate Society and he is also the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Leader.
Dr Mahadevan Jegan
PhD in Mathematics
Teacher of Mathematics
Dr Jegan is a PhD in Mathematics. To attain his initial qualification he studyied at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka (1999-2003), and graduated with a BSc (Hons) degree in Mathematics. Then he continued to work as an instructor in Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics, University of Colombo for a year. During this period he worked in a team to implement a Sri Lankan Mathematical Olympiad for the first time in Sri Lankan history. Later he came to the UK to do his postgraduate degree in Financial Mathematics at Cass Business School, London (2004-2006). He completed his PhD in Mathematics at City University London, graduating in 2013. He was also working as a visiting lecturer for Cass Business School and City University during this period.
He has joined HIC in March 2016 and currently he is teaching Mathematics and Further Mathematics to GCE A Level students. He has more than 12 years of teaching experience in Sri Lanka and the UK. He has wide knowledge in Mathematics using which he is able to let his students have a much easier understanding of complex topics. From his previous students he has received many positive feedbacks. He has helped several students with their studies and progressing to their universities.
Dr Mattie Zanganeh
PhD in English Literature and Language
Head of English
Dr Mattie Zanganeh holds a PhD in English Literature and Language from the University of Durham. She has also completed her Master’s degree in English Literature and Studies at the University of Mysore, India. She is an articulate, educated English teacher, with over ten years of experience, who is able to effectively communicate with students from diverse backgrounds or varying degrees of ability. A committed and dedicated professional with a proven ability to teach, motivate and direct students to maximum performance by encouraging a positive and energetic environment. Before Joining Harrow Independent College, Mattie has taught at secondary school, college and university level both in the UK and abroad. Having spent more than ten years in academia, Mattie contributes to the progress of HIC students in various aspects. She is also a dedicated and passionate social activist and eagerly attends different campaigns and seminars- specifically those related to the women’s rights.
Fernanda Miucci
MA in Psychology
Teacher of Psychology
Fernanda Miucci taught Philosophy at the University of Florence (Italy) prior to moving to the London School of Economics as a PhD candidate in Political Theory. She has several publications on the issues of Equality and Justice and has worked for many years in Parliament and in the private sector as political adviser. Psychology is a strong component of her academic background and over the past few years she has specialised in Psychoanalytical Studies, with special emphasis on the relationship between Psychology and Political Behaviour. Fernanda joined Harrow Independent College in September 2016.
Hubert Tomczyk
MSc in Department of Cytogenetics and Molecular Biology of Plants
Teacher of Biology
Hubert Tomczyk is experienced biologist and qualified teacher. He gained his master degree in Department of Cytogenetics and Molecular Biology of Plants at University of Łódź (Poland). For couple of years he worked in Department of Medical Genetics of Medical University of Łódż. He dealt with molecular diagnostics of genetic diseases and led activities for students of medicine where he discovered his passion for teaching and started working as a Teacher of Biology. For many years he prepared students for “matura” exam (Polish equivalent of A-level) and further education at universities. He also supported a range of extra-curricular activities, such as a sessions on nature photography and successfully prepared students for the Biology Olympiads and other competitions. He is passionate about his subject. He constantly deepen his knowledge by pursuing extra activities around his subject . He loves forest and mountain hiking. He joined HIC in February 2017.
Alan Brookes
BA (Hons), PGCE, Dip Ed.
Teacher of Sociology
Alan has very recently retired from full time teaching. He has over forty years experience in teaching History, Sociology, and Politics at A level, across a wide range of syllabuses and examination boards. He has also been an A level examiner and held the position of Director of the Sixth Form which enabled him to gain an extensive knowledge of the UCAS process and thirty years experience of advising students and writing their references. His degree was gained at UCL and he enjoys the intellectual challenge and the provision of academic support that small group tuition involves. In his spare time he looks after two bearded collie puppies he loves a lot.
