Niraj Shukla

BSc (Hons) 

Teacher of Economics and the Year Head for GCE

Niraj is a young and dynamic teacher who has been teaching for six years. He has a degree in Economics and Philosophy from the University of Nottingham and at secondary level he attended Merchant Taylors’ School which means that he has an intimate understanding of the mechanics, style and approach of a top independent school. Niraj is an extremely passionate teacher and this stems from his passion for learning: he is currently studying part time (in his free time) for a degree in Mathematics and Physics and he is also a performing amateur pianist. At HIC, he runs the Debate Society and he is also the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Leader.

Dr Mahadevan Jegan 

PhD in Mathematics

Teacher of Mathematics

Dr Jegan is a PhD in Mathematics. To attain his initial qualification he studyied at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka (1999-2003), and graduated with a BSc (Hons) degree in Mathematics. Then he continued to work as an instructor in Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics, University of Colombo for a year. During this period he worked in a team to implement a Sri Lankan Mathematical Olympiad for the first time in Sri Lankan history. Later he came to the UK to do his postgraduate degree in Financial Mathematics at Cass Business School, London (2004-2006). He completed his PhD in Mathematics at City University London, graduating in 2013. He was also working as a visiting lecturer for Cass Business School and City University during this period.

He has joined HIC in March 2016 and currently he is teaching Mathematics and Further Mathematics to GCE A Level students. He has more than 12 years of teaching experience in Sri Lanka and the UK. He has wide knowledge in Mathematics using which he is able to let his students have a much easier understanding of complex topics. From his previous students he has received many positive feedbacks. He has helped several students with their studies and progressing to their universities.

Dr Mattie Zanganeh

PhD in English Literature and Language

Head of English

Dr Mattie Zanganeh holds a PhD in English Literature and Language from the University of Durham. She has also completed her Master’s degree in English Literature and Studies at the University of Mysore, India. She is an articulate, educated English teacher, with over ten years of experience, who is able to effectively communicate with students from diverse backgrounds or varying degrees of ability. A committed and dedicated professional with a proven ability to teach, motivate and direct students to maximum performance by encouraging a positive and energetic environment. Before Joining Harrow Independent College, Mattie has taught at secondary school, college and university level both in the UK and abroad. Having spent more than ten years in academia, Mattie contributes to the progress of HIC students in various aspects. She is also a dedicated and passionate social activist and eagerly attends different campaigns and seminars- specifically those related to the women’s rights.

Fernanda Miucci

MA in Psychology

Teacher of Psychology

Fernanda Miucci taught Philosophy at the University of Florence (Italy) prior to moving to the London School of Economics as a PhD candidate in Political Theory. She has several publications on the issues of Equality and Justice and has worked for many years in Parliament and in the private sector as political adviser.  Psychology is a strong component of her academic background and over the past few years she has specialised in Psychoanalytical Studies, with special emphasis on the relationship between Psychology and Political Behaviour. Fernanda joined Harrow Independent College in September 2016.

Hubert Tomczyk

MSc in Department of Cytogenetics and Molecular Biology of Plants

Teacher of Biology

Hubert Tomczyk is experienced biologist and qualified teacher. He gained his master degree in Department of Cytogenetics and Molecular Biology of Plants at University of Łódź (Poland). For couple of years he worked in Department of Medical Genetics of Medical University of Łódż. He dealt with molecular diagnostics of genetic diseases and led activities for students of medicine where he discovered his passion for teaching and started working as a Teacher of Biology. For many years he prepared students for “matura” exam (Polish equivalent of A-level) and further education at universities. He also supported a range of extra-curricular activities, such as a sessions on nature photography and successfully prepared students for the Biology Olympiads and other competitions. He is passionate about his subject. He constantly deepen his knowledge by pursuing extra activities around his subject . He loves forest and mountain hiking. He joined HIC in February 2017.

Alan Brookes

BA (Hons),  PGCE,  Dip Ed.

Teacher of Sociology

Alan has very recently retired from full time teaching. He has over forty years experience in teaching History, Sociology, and Politics at A level, across a wide range of syllabuses and examination boards. He has also been an A level examiner and held the position of Director of the Sixth Form which enabled him to gain an extensive knowledge of the UCAS process and thirty years experience of advising students and writing their references. His degree was gained at UCL and he enjoys the intellectual challenge and the provision of academic support that small group tuition involves. In his spare time he looks after two bearded collie puppies he loves a lot.

Kandiah Kandeepan

MSc Imperial College London, PGCE, BSc (Hons)

Mr Kandeepan started his teaching career in the early 1990s with his top Advanced level results. His natural teaching abilities and systematic and structured approach has been praised by many students and parents.

After finishing his degree he started teaching at colleges in London and his passion for teaching motivated him to complete a PGCE. Furthermore, due to his career ambition and urge to become a top level teacher, he went on to study an MSc at Imperial College London.

He now has more than 20 years of teaching experience. Countless students have passed with top grades under his excellent and dedicated teaching. He is fully committed to enhancing the skills and knowledge of young students. Over the past 10 years many students have had to book in advance and wait for 2-3 months in order to get a place in his elite teaching group. Kandiah is a thinker with great vision and also a person who can add value to the child’s academic life. His teaching has elevated many students’ mathematical and analytical skills and these students have moved on to top universities to read econometrics, engineering, computer science and mathematics. Many of his students have then gone on to work in an array of elite environments such as: Rolls-Royce, UBS Bank, City Bank, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Glaxo SmithKline (GSK), in the NHS, for the Bar Council and many other leading public and private sectors.

Ms Ritu Tripathy

MBA, Post Graduate in Public Relations,  India

I am a Masters in Business Management and Post Graduate in Public Relations. After working for more than a decade in multi-nationals in India, I follow a very steady approach towards growth in life and career. I would like to enjoy each bit of my work by giving it a personal touch and learning through my past experience. I am confident in every aspect and ready to take new challenges. I am a hardworking and sensible person with good leadership qualities and can easily pick any tasks related to  Administration, Public Relations and Business management. I joined HIC in 2016 and since then the college has become an integral part of my life. HIC has gone through major developments and one big stepping stone was to get a recognition of a GOOD school in 2018 by Ofsted. I am a proud member of HIC and I believe we are doing our best in helping our students succeed in their goals.

Ms Maneesha Sharma


Maneesha gained her BA (Hons) in English from the University of Calcutta (Kolkata, India) and studied French to Diploma level. She started her career as an administrator, but quickly became a French-English translator and interpreter in India and overseas. After an extended stay in South America and Africa, where, alongside her translation work, she also started to teach, Maneesha came to live in the UK. She completed her TEFL qualification, then a Master’s degree in Education (Management) from The Open University in 1996, after which she worked several years as college administrator and radio broadcaster, before focusing mainly on English teaching. She became the GCSE English teacher of a private college, where every year her students achieved top grades in English Language and Literature. Maneesha has also taught KS2 and KS3 English, along with 11+ entrance exams, verbal reasoning and more recently, A-Level English.

Dr. Moumita Ganguly

Moumita has completed her P.hD and three years of post doctoral research work in Molecular Biology and Biotechology from University of Calcutta, India. She has done important publications in international referred journal with high impact factors. A dedicated professional with a proven ability to teach, undertake research project and motivate students by encouraging a positive and energetic environment. Her major areas of interest are teaching and research. Having spent more than ten years in research and teaching work, she has contributed to the progress of students in various aspects of life.  Her research has been highly appreciated by many scholars and educationists.  She has also contributed in the advancement of knowledge by undertaking important research projects in the field of biotechnology.

Ms Anishga Selvaranjan

MSc Business Analytics, The Manchester Metropolitan University

I am a MSc Business Analytics graduate from The Manchester Metropolitan University. I have gained significant experience in risk analysis and auditing across different clients while working as a Business Risk Associate at Ernst & Young. I have delivered and led multiple projects across different industries where I have conducted internal audits covering process design weaknesses and potential risks.

As the newly appointed College Administrator and Examinations Officer of HIC, I am looking forward to be a part of HIC’s success by adding more value to the college using my unique skills and experience in analytics.

We as a team at HIC strongly believe that we strive each day to give the best possible experience to our students whether it be their core education or personal development. This is evident from our college’s rating as ‘GOOD’ by Ofsted. I am very thrilled to be a part of HIC Family and excited to work on our goals for the coming years.

Mr Valavan Ananthakumaraswamy


Valavan gained his BS Symbolic Systems from Stanford University in California, United States, in an interdisciplinary course that focuses on the subjects of Computer Science, Pscyhology, Philosophy and Economics. Valavan has been heavily involved in tutoring with a particular focus on UCAS and US Common App assistance in addition to working for the Fulbright Commission’s Sutton Trust programme as an academic mentor. Valavan has excelled working and motivating young people, co-founding a global youth charity in 2014, working with numerous youth start-ups since across the United States, Europe, Africa and Asia. In 2021, Valavan completed a TEFL Expert Course with distinction and has shifted his focus to becoming a teacher and tutor to evoke the passion for learning in young people that he felt he lacked in his high school.
